A Map of EGOT Winners’ Birthplaces
One of the highest honors in show business is achieving an EGOT. The acronym was coined by actor Philip Michael Thomas in late 1984 and refers to individuals who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony—the four major performing arts awards in the Unites States.
While Tracy Jordan may have fictionally completed an EGOT in NBC’s 30 Rock and brought recognition to the fairly rare accomplishment, only 21 people have completed all 4 awards in competitive non-honorary categories over the years.

The first EGOT was completed in 1962 by American composer Richard Rodgers, part of musical duo Rodgers and Hammerstein. Rodgers started off with an Oscar win in 1946 for his song in the movie State Fair and completed the full EGOT set with the Emmys in 1962 for the score composed for the television documentary series Winston Churchill: The Valiant Years.

In 2024, we saw a record-tying three EGOT winners, tying the highest number of winners in a single year with 2018. Most years have no EGOT winners, and when they do, it’s rare to see more than one.
Recent EGOT winners
The most recent EGOT winners, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, won their final EGOT qualifying award together for their song Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It? heard in the 3rd season of 2023’s Only Murders in the Building. The composers and writing partners hold the record for achieving their EGOTs in the shortest time span—7 years and 7 months. They also share all six of their competitive awards jointly.

The United States dominates these awards, which isn’t too surprising considering these are US-based awards. Of the 21 EGOT winners, 15 were born in the United States—including an impressive 7 from New York alone. Each of the 7 remaining 7 states or territories produced one EGOTd winner: California, Illinois, Missouri, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Ohio, and South Carolina.
