Where Oscar-Winning Actors Were Born

Since 1929, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has held an annual Academy Awards ceremony, better known as the Oscars, to celebrate motion picture magic.

Did you know the very first Oscars ceremony was just 15 minutes long? Fifteen winners received an award of the now iconic statuette, and a tradition was born.

Over nine decades later, hundreds of people have won an Oscar. Many nations have contributed winners to the annual process, especially actors starring in movies on the big screen.

Where in the US Were the Most Oscar-Winning Actors Born?

The United States dominates these awards, which isn’t surprising considering that so much of the motion picture industry centers around Los Angeles. The top states where Oscar-winning actors were born are:

  1. New York (48)
  2. California (42)
  3. Illinois (13)
  4. Massachusetts (11)
  5. New Jersey & Pennsylvania (tied with 9)

Other Countries with the Most Oscar-Winning Actors

The US isn’t the only country to produce Oscar-winning actors. In fact, in the inaugural awards back in 1929, only two of the five actors awarded honors were American. The remaining three were from Canada (Mary Pickford), Switzerland (Emil Jannings), and England (George Arliss), respectively.

After the US, England has the most Oscar-winning actors, with 42 to date. There are also four winners from Wales and one from Scotland, giving the United Kingdom as a whole 47 winners from the acting category.

Distantly behind, with seven Oscar-winning actors, is Canada. After that, it’s France with four; Austria, Japan, Italy, and Russia all come in with three each; and the other countries on our list have two or fewer winners.

How to Create This Map

Creating maps with BatchGeo is simple. In this case, we used a spreadsheet containing Oscar winners with data taken from Wikipedia, but you can start with any data you have handy. You’ll want it to be in a spreadsheet or table and make sure you’re including a header row in your data with each column labeled.

Once your file is uploaded, you can choose your options, map your data, and even see a preview of what your markers will look like when selected.

Select Map Your Data to finish your map. If anything looks off, you can drag a marker to the correct place for a quick correction.

Create a Map with Your Own Data

You may have your own data sitting in a spreadsheet on your computer. Instead of Oscar winners, it may be customer addresses, business locations, or a list of deliveries. In each case, maps can help tell the story of that data. And now you know how to create one.

BatchGeo is your fastest way to make a custom map. There’s even sample data to use if you aren’t sure which spreadsheet to upload. Try it today for free!
