Google requests disabling of geocoding output

Google has officially requested that we disable some elements of our site that allow users to extract geocoded coordinates in bulk. It is in violation of their Terms of Service agreement. Many of the rules in the TOS are requirements of third party data providers that do not like their data being accessible outside of whichever system they have licensed it to.

I find this an unfortunate turn of events, but from our stats I recognize the majority of users do not use the geocoding export feature but rather keep their data hosted on BatchGeo by saving their map.  We will of course continue to offer free map hosting to all interested, and look forward to rolling out more features all of the time to keep our users happy.

BatchGeo is still the quickest way to make a map!

Public maps made using BatchGeo

Hundreds of maps are created everyday using BatchGeo, not all of those maps make it to the public because of our map security system.

However for those of you who have linked your map from your own public site, its easy to find these maps as they get indexed by Google:

http://www.google.com/#q=site%3Awww.batchgeo.com%2Fmap

As you can see there are thousands of maps available from all over the world on all sorts of things. We’re proud to have created such an easy system to use that so many maps are created daily.

Here’s another fun search that will show you a lot of Twitter users are happy with BatchGeo:

Unfortunately Twitter clears tweets that are over 30 days old. For a complete index of Tweets about BatchGeo, we can use Google:

Overall its great to see how many maps and happy users we have out there, as always keep posting here if you can think of ways we can continue to improve our service.

Map Printing Issues? Try this…

We recently upgraded to Google Maps API version 3. This version has a lots of advantages for access over mobile devices, and offers general performance improvements.

Unfortunately the new version also comes with some quirks around printing. Apparently some browsers will require you enable the “Print background colors and images” in order to print properly. If you are having difficulty printing maps in BatchGeo try turning on this option in your browser.

Update

This appears to be a known issue with Google Maps Version 3. The only solution I have found is to try browsers other than Internet Explorer, such as Firefox or Chrome.
