A Map of the Tallest Waterfalls in the World

What comes to mind when you imagine a waterfall? Maybe it’s the sound of the rushing water, or the droplets of mist hitting your skin leaving you damp in seconds. Are you visualizing the impressive rush of Niagara Falls? Or maybe it’s something small and closer to home, like Marietta Falls in Washington state or Upper Purgatory falls in New Hampshire?

How about something taller? While the 3 falls that make up Niagara are impressive, the tallest of them (Horseshoe Falls) tops out at 57 meters (187 ft) in height. It pales in comparison to the tallest waterfall in Canada (James Bruce Falls), which reaches a soaring height of 840 meters (2756 ft). And while that’s no doubt a marvelous height, James Bruce Falls is only one of several falls that are tied for 9th tallest on earth.

Where in the World is the Tallest Waterfall?

Nestled into the Guiana Highlands in the Bolívar state of Venezuela is Angel Falls, the world’s tallest uninterrupted waterfall. According to some measurements, it’s also Earth’s tallest waterfall overall. At its highest point, it reaches a height of 979 meters (3,212 ft).

Coming in second is Tugela Falls, a complex of seasonal waterfalls located in the Royal Natal National Park in KwaZulu-Natal Province, Republic of South Africa. Tugela Falls is often considered the second tallest waterfall in the world, officially measuring 948 meters (3,110 ft). However, a 2016 Czech scientific expedition marked the falls as 983 meters (3,225 ft) tall, which places it slightly above the 979 meter height of Angel Falls.

Where are Some of the Other Waterfalls?

While the tallest waterfalls are scattered all around the world, some regions definitely have more than others. Grouping by continent, the Americas contain the majority of the waterfalls we’ve tracked, with 19 between North and South America.
