UK Postcodes and Google Geocoding

We’ve heard from a number of users that they have problems with UK postcodes getting located. I always assumed it was something I wasn’t doing quite right, but it appears that there are a number of issues surrounding geocoding uk postcodes.

Apparently it has something to do with the “Royal Mail” service and copyrights. The UK would be smart to get this sorted out, zip code databases are a staple of open GIS in the U.S…. I am not sure why it would be different overseas.

Something has changed since September 2009 – then I used batchgeo to convert 200 postcodes and plot them, very successfully.
Today I was trying to repeat the process with an updated list, and find that it ignores the last two characters of the postcode; ie all E18 2xx postcodes map to the same point on the map.

Ian – We moved to the Google Geocoder. It seems to have a disadvantage of not supporting UK post codes.

Try using the Yahoo Geocoder: http://www.batchgeo.com/yahoo_maps.php

I am trying to display a number of addresses all over the world but primarily in Mexico on a Google map. If I am able to locate the address manually using Google maps, is there a way to save the geocoding information necessary for Batch Geo to plot them? If so, how?

    Thank you.
