New Feature: Different Colored Markers / Grouping

As of last night I’ve added the ability for map markers to be colored based on a “Group” field. You can create up to 6 different values for the Group field and each will display in a different color. A legend will be added below the map that shows the description of each group and the color of the markers in that group.

The colors are: orange, blue, green, purple, red, and yellow.

You can enable this feature by selecting a “Group By” column when creating your map. If you do not wish to group by a certain field, do not include a “Group” column in your source data and/or select “Don’t Group” in the Map Fields section.

For awhile now people have been asking for a way to change marker color. I think this is the most straightforward way to allow maps with different categories of markers. Here is an example map showing multiple groupings:

Let me know if you have any feedback for this feature by posting comments below. Thanks!

Great work on this. In needed a tool like this and was totally impressed with the usability. Good effort.

    Hi:
i am the new user of your website. it is very amazing that you add color function into the map.
    However, I have a question.
How can i add this color function into the excel spreadsheet?
it seems that the excel spreadsheet example in your website, has no such function.
    Thanks.

Is there any way to add more than 6 values to the group field? I am in retail. I am a extreme novice to this and I am looking to denote the name of a Regional Director or District Manager (up to 10 at max).

I think there is something missing in my kml file because when I import this to google maps, the markers don’t show.

An output of the kml file:
    id=”0″>1undefined0

Why is it returning “undefined” in he icon style. I have manually inserted:
    http://maps.google.com/mapfiles/kml/paddle/blu-blank.png
to link to one of Google’s custom markers

Good Blog! I need the same information that Sean Luckman wanted. I need to create 9 groups. Like him, 10 max would work much better than six. Thanks.

  • Josh says:

Is there a way to do a “Group By” after creating the map in the edit section or can it only be done when creating the map initially? Thanks.

  • admin says:

You should be able to edit your map and add the group by feature at that point.

  • Drew says:

Very nice feature but I would also like to have a maximum of 9 or 10 groups instead of 6.

  • Katie says:

Is there are way to change the colors of the markers? We were hoping for the green to be the color of a different group.

  • Dustin says:

I have the same request as Katie. I would like to choose the color each group is represented by.

  • melissa says:

My marker colors are not matching the color names. My blues are greens, greens are red, etc. How do I ensure this doesn’t happen?

Also, is there a way to sort/order the data by distance?

More than 26 characters would help as well.

  • melissa says:

Ok, I now understand why, but how can I ensure that my red “keyword” is always the same. For what I’m doing, each color represents something specific and the colors need to be consistent.

  • roman says:

Right, it would be nice to have the possibility to specify our own color or at least to specify which of the 6 pre-defined colors should be used.

  • Renee says:

The colors are great! However, I would really like to have some control over them, meaning I need certain groups to be a certain color. Could we add a field to specify ‘group color’? I tried just making it happen so that they way they are presented would be the right color for me. For instance, I need one group to be orange. A couple years ago when I set this up, orange was the first group listed. However, I noticed that it is now red. My tests revealed the colors show up in this order: red, blue, green, yellow, purple, l. blue, and orange for all the rest. Can we get some control over this? Thanks!!!!!

  • Tom V says:

I too want to specify the color of the markers. It seems that no matter how I identify the fields, the greatest number of items in each ‘group’ gets labeled with a green dotted marker. Can I change this?

  • fire says:

Yeah, as mentioned above, I think having control over the colors is something primary and very needed, if not there no way to assign a specific color (from the 6 options) to a specific group if you have multiple maps.

  • Heather says:

I would like to be able to change the markers individually by clicking on each marker on the map. This way I could change the color or use a different marker if available. These features are available on the google maps.

    Thanks

  • Jon says:

I too would like the ability to control the color of pins for each group. We want to use green for sites that have a certain attribute and red for those that do not.
